In Los Angeles Unified, 48% of third graders met the math standard in 2024-25, but only 36% of fifth graders did. Those are different kids, so it isn't a straight line. Still, fifth grade asks for a lot, including adding and multiplying fractions and working with decimals. That's why it helps to catch gaps early.
